Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
  • A diagnosis aids in understanding an individual with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and allows for an appropriate support plan.
  • Early diagnosis and access to appropriate services have been shown to be effective in decreasing the risk of secondary disabilities of FASD (e.g., justice involvement, mental health issues, school disruption, etc.).
  • The emotional costs, social implications and costs to society are decreased if FASD is diagnosed early.
  • Diagnosis of FASD requires an interdisciplinary team approach to assessment and intervention in order to provide a thorough assessment and understanding for this complex problem.
  • Mackenzie Health offers funded assessments in the Central LHIN as well as the North Simcoe Muskoka LHIN in partnership with Waypoint – Centre for Mental Health Care.

Calling Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) Checklist

If you’ve been asked to call LAO’s toll-free service number, the following things may be helpful to remember:

Have a pen and paper nearby and the following information ready before you call:

  • Personal identification
  • Your disclosure papers
  • Crown Screening Form (usually the first or second page of your disclosure)
  • Your copy of the papers you received when you were released by the police or got out on bail:
  • Appearance Notice
  • Promise to Appear
  • Undertaking
  • Recognizance

Please note it is unlikely you will qualify for a legal aid certificate if:

  • You are a single person who is making more than $12,500 per year; or
  • You are part of a family of two making more than $22,500 per year; or
  • You are part of a family of three making more than $26,220 per year; or
  • You are part of a family of four making more than $30,120 per year or
  • You are part of a family of five or more making in excess of $33,960 per year.
