Forensic Mental Health System

What is the Forensic Mental Health System?

The forensic mental health system involves people who have mental health challenges that have come into contact with the law or courts.

Goals of the Forensic Mental Health System:

  • Rehabilitation (improving your mental health)
  • Reintegration (live successfully in the community)
In Canada, we do not punish people for crimes if they have a mental illness that:
  1. Prevents the person from understanding what they did
  2. Prevents the person from understanding what the consequences of their actions would be

The rules of the criminal justice system are in the Criminal Code of Canada.

The mental health system rules are in the Mental Health Act.
